Hello Subscribers,
You’re invited to write with us. This is my favorite kind of parallel play. We do some learning, then you and I write, and then we talk about what we’re writing!
Specifically, it’s all about specifics you know, my dear friend and colleague
and I are collaborating to bring you a course in writing FLASH— that form of a very short story that leaves you tingling long after you finished reading. We love the form and hope you’ll join the fun in our supportive zoom-vironment. I just made that word up.
Ciao for now,

Course Overview:
Dive into the electrifying world of flash writing in this six-week online course, "The Practice of Writing - FLASH," led by Leah Scott-Kirby and Nina Barufaldi. This course is designed for writers of all levels who want to develop their craft of flash fiction, nonfiction, memoir, speculative nonfiction, monologue, and prose poetry.
Flash writing is a powerful, concise form of storytelling where every word matters. Stories in this genre are typically under 1,000 words, packing a punch with their brevity while delivering a beginning, middle, and end that leaves the reader with a resonant emotional or intellectual response. Whether you're a seasoned writer looking to sharpen your craft or a newcomer eager to explore a new genre, this class offers a dynamic environment to practice and explore the art of flash.
Each week, we will dive into a different form of flash writing, combining mini-lessons on craft with guided prompts. You'll have the opportunity to write during class time and share your work in a supportive, intimate setting.
Course Highlights:
- Weekly Focus: Each session will spotlight a different flash genre which we will read in class—fiction, nonfiction, memoir, speculative nonfiction, monologue, and prose poetry—allowing you to experiment with various styles and techniques.
- Craft Mini-Lessons: Gain insights into the essentials of flash writing, including tips on economy of language, narrative arc, and creating impact in a short space. Learn about specific genres and how to apply these techniques to your work.
- Guided Writing Sessions: With cameras and audio off, you'll have dedicated time to write during each class, using prompts to spark creativity.
- Feedback and Sharing: Reconvene after writing to share experiences and, if time permits, read your work aloud for constructive feedback.
- Small Class Size: Limited to 12 participants to foster an intimate, interactive experience.
- Final Project: Submit a favorite piece to a literary journal.
